The Commission on Elections issued COMELEC Resolution No. 9905 last October 22, 2014 stating the calendar of activities for the upcoming 2015 Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, less than a month from now. Just last January 22, the election period for the said election had started, especially on the highlight in the imposition of gun ban by the poll body. We think that we would be happy after more than a year, we are now on the mechanisms of governance again, but suddenly last January 22, the same time the election period had started, the 16th Congress had decided to give another youth a heartbreak.
On that said date, the House of Representatives and the Senate had reached an agreement to postpone the elections, resetting it once more in October 2016. But the poll body’s spokesperson James Jimenez said through a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that they (the poll body) had not yet received a formal letter regarding this matter and they are waiting to see how it turns out.
It is so disappointing in the fact that the hopes of the youth to serve their fellow youth and their community would be on hold for more than a year again, but Congress reasoned out that the postponement is for the reforms in the Sangguniang Kabataan will be discussed to be approved upon. Why is it for all legislators to fast-track the postponement of the Sangguniang Kabataan elections whereas they are slow just like an old conservative man when they push for its reforms? Why is the poll body so concerned of the funds for the said polls if they can’t just iron out the issue for the 2016 National and Local Elections automation system which involves big amounts of taxpayers’ money? For the institutions that are involved in this postponement, we could only say that this is a disservice to us youth.
Congress, you have given yourselves ample time to correct things in Sangguniang Kabataan, yet you have not accomplished anything? Are you just giving us false hopes? Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr., why are you reasoning out that your good office is busy for the preparations for the upcoming polls? Are shoving us away from the involvement in governance? We, in Sigaw ng Kabataan Coalition will consider postponement in one condition: You (Congress) should fast-track things in the empowerment of the Sangguniang Kabataan before the last session of the 16th Congress. Take note that the political careers of each legislator lies on the youth, as the biggest voting share in the 2016 elections.
